Welcome to the Cyberscene, the IRC chat service powered by Seedy!
The Cyberscene is a community of retrophiles, tech tinkerers, gamers, programmers, Wireshark wizards, and everything in between. Though it is run by someone who is totally blind, everyone is welcome in the Cyberscene, regardless of whether they have working eyes or not.
To connect to the Cyberscene IRC server, you will need an IRC client. There are many IRC clients out there. However, if you're a screen reader user on Windows, I recommend the free AdiIRC client with the adispeak plugin.
The table below lists some of the available channels on the IRC server. More channels will be added as time goes by. For accessibility, the table has been keyed. This means that screen reader users will have column and row headers read out to them as they scroll down the table, so they always know what they're looking at.
Channel | Topic |
---|---|
#RetroTech | All things old school hardware and software up until 2010. |
#general | General chat. |
#gaming | Anything to do with modern video games and consoles, such as Xbox series S/X and PS5. |
#TechTalk | General conversations about computers and other tech geeky stuff. |
#cmd | Bots go here. |
#RetroGames | Classic video games and consoles from the Atari 2600 to the Xbox 360. |
#programming | Software development in any programming language. |
Use the following details to connect to the server with your client of choice:
While your IRC client might give you the option to enter a password when connecting, for general users, a password is not required. However, password or no password, your data will still be encrypted with SSL/TLS if you connect on port 6060.
/msg [nickname] [message]. For example,
/msg Simon Hello Simon, I'm Bob.
/nick [new nickname]. For example,
/nick tactical_nuke2005
/me [emote]command. For example,
/me sighs loudly. In chat, this would appear as
[nickname] sighs loudly
/list. Lists show up differently depending on your IRC client and its configuration, but they typically include the name of the channel, the channel's topic, and operator or server-set channel modes.
/join #channel.
/part. Part is short for depart, meaning to leave or walk away from something.
/quitor
/disconnect. You will then be disconnected from the server.
